Using archival footage to tell the story, Dawson City: Frozen Time pieces together the bizarre true history of a collection of some 500 films dating from 1910s - 1920s, which were lost for over 50 years until being discovered buried in a sub-arctic swimming pool deep in the Yukon Territory in 1978.

The score that will accompany the film, composed by Jónsi Birgisson, the guitarist and vocalist for the Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós, together with collaborator Alex Somers will be developed using a process reflecting the history of the recovered images, with field recordings to be made in Dawson City, possibly recorded underwater using instruments that have been exposed to extreme climates, buried, and frozen before being retrieved and played.

Just a friendly reminder that Jónsi sampled Elmo.

Like it’s so out there and almost kind of silly, but it makes sense! GO as well as his (and Alex’s) visual art have these super strong themes of childhood, boyhood… And here he went taking audio from a Sesame Street toy! And actually came out with something really interesting, and pretty. I love this man SO MUCH.

"Also my newest thing is whittling," he says. "I just got into it last year - I got this whittling kit, like, a small book about whittling and a knife and a sharpener - and I’ve been hooked ever since. Now I’m carving one spoon every day I’m on tour for the rest of the year. It’s really relaxing and you’re creating. Wood is really forgiving, so if you make a mistake you can always kind of fix it and it looks like it’s supposed to be that way."

Can we all please appreciate this beautiful picture?
Jónsi would make such a good father.
So would Alex.
Why aren’t they parents yet?
WHY AREN’T THEY MARRIED YET? That’d be effin’ cute…
